A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted, resulting in deprivation of oxygen in that part of the brain. Within minutes, brain cells deprived of oxygen begin to die.
A stroke is a medical emergency. Early action and immediate transport to the Emergency Department helps lead to prompt treatment which may minimize brain damage and resulting impairment.
Common symptoms of stroke include sudden onset of weakness/paralysis, numbness, loss of speech or loss of vision.
Call 911 if you believe you are having a stroke so immediate intervention can be initiated.
